Flexibility in mobility packages – balancing employees’ expectations with consistency and equity
The fast evolution of assignees’ demographics, assignment patterns, and technology is increasingly prompting mobility managers to adopt a degree of flexibility in their mobility policies. Mercer's 2019 Flexible Mobility Policies Survey sought to find out how companies have introduced flexibility in their Mobility Policies and whether their approach has been successful:
- To what extent have companies introduced flexibility in their Global Mobility policies?
- Which benefits are considered as core (i.e. non-negotiable) and which are flexible?

Available in mid-December, the report from our Flexible Mobility Policies Survey presents a closer look at these overall findings:
- Thirty-seven percent of survey participants reported having flexible mobility policies currently, and another 43% hoped to introduce some flexibility into their mobility policies/practices.
- More than 70% consider that introducing flexible benefits has resulted in cost efficiency.
- Effective tracking and reporting was rated as the most challenging aspect of introducing flexibility in mobility policies.
- Flexibility is prevalently provided in the form of lump sums, their main advantage, according to 90% of the respondents who currently use them, being the attendant reduction in administration.
- The survey results showed that a higher proportion of respondents offered flexibility for the business (and other stakeholders) than for employees and (other stakeholders).
