2019 cost of living ranking: Mexico As part of its Cost of Living data services, Mercer surveys commodity prices throughout the world. In this series of infographics, we examine the cost of commonly consumed beverages over the last five years in China, Mexico, Poland, and South Africa. Expatriate cost of living in Mexico Overall cost of living ranking for expatriates in Mexican cities Here we focus on five of the largest cities in Mexico for which Mercer surveys cost of living to see how each would fit in our global Cost of Living Ranking. *Actual ranking (included in the global cost of living ranking) **Virtual Ranking (not included in the global cost of living ranking) Beverage prices in Mexico from 2014 to 2019 Beer 0.33 liter of an international brand beer The beer industry in Mexico is an important one, with exports to more than 140 countries and imports from almost 70. Mexican beer producers heavily rely on imports of malted barley from the United States in order to sustain production, hence potentially affecting the price in correlation with the demand. In each of the 5 Mexican cities Mercer surveys, beer prices have increased. Coffee A cup of an espresso coffee at a popular and fashionable cafe, including service The cost of a cup of espresso has increased in 4 or 5 Mexican cities surveyed. Milk One liter of pasteurized whole milk, 2.5% or more fat content Mexico depends heavily on the United States and other countries for dairy imports. This, along with a growing local demand for dairy products, has driven up the price of milk almost 25% over the last 5 years in all of the cities Mercer surveys. Water One liter of non-sparkling mineral water Demand for bottled water in Mexico has been steadily increasing in recent years and is expected to grow further. All of our surveyed cities in Mexico experienced a sharp increase (above 85%) in the price of a one liter of non-sparkling water.
